Mirror mirror – Addiction to death is a work that describes the precarious men’s condition made of fragility which is nothing but the symptom of the inability to accept one’s destiny of fallibility, of imperfection, of finitude.
And this is why, in those moments of fragility, one is willing to resort to surrogates or to any panacea to alleviate the pain of the evil of living.

The painting highlights vices such as smoking (represented by the cigarette), alcohol (represented by the glass) and the use of psychotropic substances released into the circulation (represented by the blade that offers the access point).
Moreover the mirror symbolizes a past of youth with all possible correlations of vigor, omnipotence, achievements or goals to be achieved.

If going back is not feasible, and we have to accept the part of our present as a the result of our past actions, it is instead possible to erase the signs of time and its passage to restore the appearance to the radiance that was.

And this is the function of the mirror in the composition: it brings to mind another, new vice, that is, the craving for cosmetic surgery.

It is true that countering the signs of aging with surgical practices, although potentially lethal, preserves us from the imminence of death, at least in intentions. However, it is equally true that subjecting oneself to repeated interventions increases the risk of perishing for a futile cause and it is as if every time one has a taste of death in small doses, as almost unconsciously wanting to get used to it.

Mirror mirror – Addiction to death è un’opera che descrive la condizione precaria dell’uomo fatta di fragilità che altro non sono se non il sintomo della incapacità di accettare il proprio destino di fallibilità, di imperfezione, di finitezza.
Ed è per questo, che in quei momenti di fragilità, si è disposti a ricorrere a dei surrogati o a qualsiasi panacea per alleviare la pena del male di vivere.

Nel dipinto sono messi in evidenza i vizi come il fumo (rappresentato dalla sigaretta), l’alcool (rappresentato dal bicchiere) e dall’uso si sostanze psicotrope immesse in circolo (rappresentate dalla lametta che offre il punto di accesso).
In più lo specchio simboleggia un passato di gioventù con tutte le correlazioni possibili di vigore, onnipotenza, conquiste o traguardi da raggiungere.

Se tornare indietro non è attuabile, e bisogna accettare la parte del nostro presente che è il risultato delle nostre azioni passate, è invece possibile cancellare i segni del tempo e del suo passaggio per riportare l’aspetto al fulgore che fu.

Ed è questa la funzione dello specchio nella composizione: richiama alla mente un altro, nuovo vizio, ossia il ricorso smanioso alla chirurgia estetica.

È vero che contrastare i segni del tempo con pratiche chirurgiche, sebbene potenzialmente letali, ci preserva dall’imminenza della morte, almeno nelle intenzioni. Tuttavia è altrettanto vero che sottoponendosi a ripetuti interventi si aumenta il rischio di perire per una causa futile ed è come se ogni volta si abbia un assaggio della morte a piccole dosi, quasi si voglia inconsciamente abituarsi ad essa.
