Bolgia is the first painting of the Escape Trilogy and shows the existence of the human being trapped in his own human condition and his own finitude is represented by the boundaries of the canvas itself.
It is all a tangle of bodies in the exhausting effort to gain their place in the sun – although the colors are dull – that is, desperately trying to find a place that continuously fails them. Some are exhausted, slumped to the ground, others resist and undaunted continue to contrast the frame that keeps closing on them.
Nudity is a recurring theme in my paintings and represents the inability to defend oneself from one’s destiny, not having any shelter against the adversities.
Another clue of man’s “blindness” – particularly in this painting – is given by the fact that the subjects have their eyes closed, highlighting how impossible it is for human beings to foresee the future and how good or bad it will be the one is about to overwhelm them.

Bolgia è il primo dipinto della Trilogia Escape e mostra l’esistenza dell’essere umano come intrappolata nella sua stessa condizione di umanità e quindi di finitezza rappresentata dai confini della tela stessa.
È tutto un groviglio di corpi nell’estenuante sforzo di conquistarsi il proprio posto al sole – sebbene i colori siano spenti – ovvero tesi a trovare disperatamente una collocazione che continua a sfuggire loro. Alcuni sono accasciati al suolo stremati, altri resistono e imperterriti continuano a contrastare la cornice che si chiude su di loro.
La nudità è un tema ricorrente nei miei dipinti e rappresenta l’incapacità di difendersi dal proprio destino, il non aver alcun riparo contro le avversità.
Un altro indizio della “cecità” dell’uomo – in particolare in questo dipinto – è dato dal fatto che i soggetti abbiamo gli occhi chiusi, mettendo in evidenza quanto sia impossibile per l’essere umano prevedere il futuro e quanto di buono o cattivo stia per travolgerlo.
